2020.04.24 14:05 JackMacWindowsLinux I created an AI to play Geometry Dash levels. So far, it has managed to beat Stereo Madness and Back On Track, and I plan to have it play at least the first eight levels eventually.

About two years ago, I started a project to develop a bot that would automatically play Geometry Dash levels. I was partially inspired by SethBling's MarI/O AI for Super Mario World, but since I don't know much about setting up neural networks like that, as well as the relative difficulty of mapping all of the memory addresses for the block locations and types into the NN. Instead, I just used some random evolution to run the bot.
The program used a simple genetic algorithm, where it would use a base generation, and evolved random species that were mutations of that generation. The best species of the generation (the one that got the farthest in the level) would be chosen as the base for the next generation. Each generation was defined to have 50 species until creating a new generation (I realized later that that might have been too high of a value). To protect against getting stuck, I had it delete the last jump it made if no progress was made in that generation. To actually execute this plan, it would read in the X position of the player, and if a jump was registered at that spot, it would click the mouse. A decrease in the X position would be registered as a death, triggering a new species.
I first let the bot, named DashBot 2.0 (I used the name for something else previously), run Stereo Madness for around 12 hours while live-streaming it on both Twitch and YouTube. However, I noticed that it wasn't making very much progress, and was getting stuck at some parts. After trying two more times, I eventually shelved the project to come back to it at a later date. For reference, the furthest it was ever able to get through SM was about 15%.
But recently, my stream VODs have been gaining some traction, and I've gotten over 6000 views on one of them and over 4000 on another. I decided that since I now have a bunch of time on my hands, why not reboot the bot project?
I rearchitected DashBot to get rid of the generation concept, and instead created a new base each time it got further in the level. I also fixed some of the code that made it go back so it wouldn't erase a jump if it was getting stuck before that jump (if the program gets desynced and the jump map gets broken, for example). Finally, I ended up stumbling upon a good formula to determine the actual odds of making a jump.
I rebooted the bot, now called DashBot 3.0, and ran it on Stereo Madness again for about six hours offline to test whether it worked. To my surprise, it was extremely better than DashBot 2.0. In that time, it was able to get past where old DashBot stopped, and in less than a third of the time. In the middle of those six hours I had to add in code to handle switching modes to the ship. I then started a livestream at where I left off. I had some trouble in the beginning, but eventually those issues were rectified and I was able to just let it run.
Sixteen hours later, during a quick check to see how it was doing, I saw probably the one thing I didn't expect to see that quickly. Level Complete! DashBot 3.0 actually finished the level, and it only took around 24 hours to do. I was amazed at how it did. Here is the link to the final attempt before it finished. (The stream links will be at the bottom of the post.)
This happened three weeks ago. I wanted to hold off on doing Back On Track to let my internet usage settle down before doing it again. (I'm lucky that Comcast got rid of the 1TB overage fee.) Finally, a few days ago, I started the stream back up again to run Back On Track. This time, it took much longer, but I think it was pretty much just bad luck that it kept getting stuck later in the level. 50 hours into the stream, it completed the level. Here's the completion highlight for that, too.
I have made DashBot 3.0 open-source on GitHub for anyone to try out on their own. It does only support Windows at the moment. I also posted the finished jump maps on the repository as well. You can get it at https://github.com/MCJack123/DashBot-3.0 . I have posted builds of the executables in the Releases tab, which require Visual C++ Redistributable 2019, but I can't guarantee them to be working since I just stuck them up there without checking whether they work on other computers.
Here are the Twitch VODs for anyone who is interested in seeing the bot's progress:
Stereo Madness (muted because of copyright)
Back On Track, first 48 hours
Back On Track, last 2 hours
Not trying to self-promote, but if you want to catch the stream when I do Polargeist, you can follow me on Twitch (JackMacWindows).

2020.04.15 16:37 VedantBorle ‘Trolls World Tour’ Receives Biggest Digital Debut According to Universal

Movies and shows on digital platforms are receiving a lot of attention at the moment, with people practising social distancing to flatten the curve of the coronavirus pandemic. This seems to have worked in favour of Universal’s Trolls World Tour, which released on 10 April on premium video-on-demand services and a handful of drive-in cinemas. Universal claims that the movie, which is a sequel of the 2016 Trolls, received the biggest debut for a digital release.
Trolls World Tour is the first major title to bypass a traditional theatre release and come out primarily on digital media, paving the way for, probably, the new era of cinema release.
Although Universal refused to release any statistics in support of the claim, they noted that Trolls World Tour is the number 1 title across major on-demand platforms such as Amazon, Comcast, Apple and FandangoNow. The studio had made the DreamWorks Animation title available to rent of premium VOD for 48 hours for $19.99. The drastic step was taken after theatres all over the world closed down to tackle the spread of the coronavirus. Trolls World Tour is notable since it is the first major big-budget film to break the standard theatrical window of 90 days and open on home entertainment platforms simultaneously.
Although most big-budget films have opted to delay their release due to the theatre closures, Trolls World Tour decided to go ahead with their release dates since the studio was deep into its marketing campaign for the film. This included several brand partnerships which would have proved too costly to release it at a later date.
Other studios have followed the same tactic as Universal. Paramount sold romantic comedy movie The Loverbirds to Netflix. The movie stars Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae. On the other hand, Disney decided to release Artemis Fowl, the sci-fi fantasy film, straight to its streaming platform Disney+ .

2019.10.21 20:19 philbax How do I tell when there is a first-run episode (or: what rules govern the "new" tag)?

I get that when I "save" a show, it records all episodes and there's no way to record only new episodes. What I don't get is what governs the "new" tag, and how I'm supposed to tell which episodes are *really* new (first-run).
For example, I've "saved" Guy's Grocery Games. Right now S21E6 is marked as "new". S22E5 is *actually* the newest episode that aired a few weeks ago. But, how am I supposed to know when a truly-new episode in S22 actually airs?
Related: I can't find any way on movies or series to see the "original air date" of an item. This would be *immensely* helpful, and is available was available on Comcast, DirecTV, and Google Fiber TV. I don't know if this information isn't available on Philo because it's not provided by the source, and each of the other services actually cached that data themselves? But having this info would make it a lot easier to tell if the "new" episode really is new.
As it is, when I open Guy's Grocery Games, it appears that it opens to the newest and upcoming episodes. There is no immediate visual indication of which episodes are "DVR" vs "VOD", when the episodes originally aired (it shows their last-aired date, so e.g. S22E2 shows "Sun 6p" whilst S22E3 shows "9/18 11p"; not really useful info to me), or really any indication of where I should start watching. The only tag I can see is "new", which I have to scroll left to see on S21E6, which aired "Wed 8p". I don't know why this was the chosen episode. It's not the oldest unwatched recorded episode (S21E4 is also DVRd). It's not the most recently recorded episode (S22E2 aired "Sun 6p"). It also isn't the newest episode (that's S22E5). I really don't understand. Perhaps S22E2 also aired previously and was originally DVRd then, so S21E6 was the episode most recently added to the DVR? Seems unlikely, but possible.
In my personal opinion, when I pull up a saved show, the "new" tag should be on all unwatched episodes that have been DVRd (in which case, it should probably consider non-current seasons 'watched', and/or we probably also need the option to manually mark episodes/seasons as watched, so the tag can be cleared if we watched it elsewhere or just don't want to watch it). That way, I immediately know where to *start* watching from my recordings. And having the original, first-run air date of the episode on the tile would be helpful to let me know how new or old it truly is.
As it is, it just doesn't make sense to me.
But perhaps I'm just not understanding the "right" way to use the service? Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

2019.05.23 23:33 ThomasMTroxell Xfinity ends support for OnDemand on Tivos

I received a letter today that says Comcast/Xfinity will remove all Xfinity Video on Demand (VOD) service from ALL Tivos on June 25, 2019. Xfinity claims that this app runs on out of date technology and the servers are being shut down. The only option to watch VOD is to use the Xfinity Stream app, watch online, use a certain Smart TV or streaming platform (Roku), or get an Xfinity Set Top Box (STB). I use a Bolt Vox. Tivo Xfinity on demand letter that I received today - https://imgur.com/gallery/px3fK7H
I thought the Comcast was required to offer CableCards that functioned fully and provided access to VOD. Per a previous Tivo/Xfinity press release, the release states that Comcast agrees to allow Tivo customers to use their Tivo devices to access VOD until a new IP-based solution is finalized.

Overwatch Patch Notes – June 26, 2018

Video Endorsements and Looking for Group!

1.25 Known Issues List

Obscure Lunar Colony feedback
It is a bit odd. Somebody else mentioned that it bothered them as well. Let me see if I can get that fixed up. Thanks.
Endorsements? Please explain
Sorry, the wording is a bit confusing.
Each match, you can endorse up to three players.
You can only endorse a specific individual once every 12 hours.
Hopefully that clarifies.
LFG is just too good
We’re really happy that you’re enjoying the feature. Our feature team worked extremely hard on this patch and poured their hearts into it.
We’re actively taking feedback and also have a bunch of improvements coming for the system (some of these will even be on the PTR very soon). Let us know if you there are areas of confusion or if there are changes you’d like to see.
It is a little awkward when one of the group members leaves.
We agree. We have a solution for this in an upcoming patch.
Filters you choose reset if you leave the LFG menu
This is a bug and will be fixed ASAP.
Tracer blink wobble
Hey there we believe this is fixed. Can you let us know if it’s still happening? Thanks.
It seems like good addition but I don’t see many ppl using it.
We’re currently filling 140~ groups a minute.
Keep in mind, the system does not show all groups all the time. It won’t show groups that are full and now queued. It also won’t show you groups outside of your skill range or latency threshold.
Nerf Ball Hero!
We agree. Lucio’s pickrate in Lucioball is very concerning to us.

OWWC Group Stage Tickets On Sale Now

Wait time for groups: 4 to 6 minutes. Not worth it at all.
Hey there thanks for the feedback on wait times. We track this really closely, I’ll talk with the team and make sure we’re reviewing it after the patch yesterday.
Cheers
Sombra rework can we get a hint?
Sure. These changes started by seeing how far we could push the duration of her Stealth and Translocator abilities. As we pushed them out, it allowed her to play more and more as an scout/infiltrator for your team and also allowed her more time to pick and choose when and where she popped out to ambush her enemies.
So now she has infinite duration on both Stealth and Translocator, but we had to solve a couple problems that were caused by these changes. For one, she needed to be able to destroy the translocator, or it would often be stuck in some place she didn’t want it to be. To that end, you can now destroy it by looking towards it and pressing the Interact key. Also, Stealth giving you 75% bonus movement speed forever was… a bit strong. This bonus has been lowered to 50%. In addition, she can no longer contest objectives while in Stealth, since she that would just be super frustrating with infinite duration.
These changes really interesting for her as now she is in complete control over when she reveals herself, allow her to time her hacks better for her team, or go for a back line ambush during a critical moment in a team fight.
I guess that was more than a hint.

Video The Champion Revealed

Speaking of reworks: torbjorn
We don’t have details but it is one of the things that’s actively being worked on. We’ve tried dozens of new abilities and tweaks to the turrets and his gun so far. We have some interesting leads but nothing is solidified yet. I know you’re anxious to hear more details than that but he’s really in a state of flux right now and changing rapidly day to day. When things start to settle down, we’ll communicate more.

Since the patch, Dual Zone is not working properly (at least I hope)
Hey there, thanks for writing up such a detailed posted. Including your settings is very useful, we appreciate that.
Our game play and QA folks are checking this out. There were no intentional changes to the code or data for this system. We're also looking to make sure there were no unintentional changes or side effects from another change. Any additional information to help us understand exactly what you're experiencing is always appreciated (from OP or others who come by).
Cheers.

Questions Answers
Great Documentary, really enjoyed it. After watching it, your ex-partner Kenny seemed like he threw you under the bus, especially considering he appeared no less guilty than you. Have you had to work with him since? Do you hold any animosity towards him and his actions? Bottom line is this: Kenny wishes he never met Me and I wish I never met Kenny. The fact is, I was the best thing that ever happened to Kenny. Not only did he capitalize off of my corrupt activity, he also received a 3/4 disability pension, kept all the ill gotten gains, and he didn't have to do a day because he had me to sacrifice...so, I wish I never met Kenny. He also had not worked with me in 3 years when he decided to set me up - this was left out of the doc.
Yes and no. No for the fact that he decided to cooperate against me, but yes for the way that he tried to set me up for a kidnapping which NEVER was supposed to happen.
What percentage of NYPD are really corrupt (extremely illegal activity)? 1) Very Very tiny, less than 1 percent.
What percentage are very mildly corrupt (e.g. accepting bribes, clocking in for overtime to go to bars, and doing misdemeanors)? 2) Close to 10. In the police world, any bit of corruption is corruption, even taking a half price pizza makes you a "corrupt" cop for unlawful Gratuity.
What percentage are complete law abiders (e.g. not turning on lights just to run a red light)? 3) I am sure most people both in civilian life and police life are guilty of this. There's a little bit of larceny in everybody, you could steal time by going through a red light or speeding, or even something like forgetting your seatbelt. Even my grandmother might smoke in front of a no-smoking sign, so at any given time for anybody, it could be 0-100%
What do you think of the current stand off between officers and the Black Lives Matter movement? I think it's a shame, I think all lives matter, black and white, civilians and police officers. I think there should be a common ground or understanding where everyone takes a step back to see what is going on. There are 3 sides to every story, either individual and the truth. I think one way to get a clear story is to require all officers to wear body cameras at all times, and have non-lethal weapons as the primary deterrence.
We need more cops like you. I think you're the only person on earth who thinks that.
What was the single worst thing you saw whilst you was with the NYPD? I've seen a lot. Heads crushed by trucks...one thing is not worse than the other. I've seen severed body parts, victims rolled up in rugs...
The ugliest thing I saw was a guy in a drug den, fell to his own devices and fell through the floor and got hung up between a floor joist and steam pipe. He was steamed to death by the steam pipe while being hung. This is the worst visual I recall.
What's the hardest decision you've had to make while on the job? Also what was the most rewarding? Every decision when you are an officer gets easier and easier to make because they repeat on a daily basis. Whether it's corruption, or making an arrest, they are difficult, but the more you make em, the easier they get.
Most rewarding, saving several people from a burning building by evacuating people while asleep, and a 2 year old baby by giving him mouth to mouth.
What was your most interesting or exciting case ? As a patrol cop, you don't really handle cases from beginning to end. You respond to emergencies. Some lead to minor investigative work.
A drug dealer shot his best friend over a lovers quarrel. A father killed a new born. On patrol you don't follow through to the end. I've arrested murderers and rapists, but never built an investigation to find one.
In many professional worlds, behavior that may be unethical does not necessarily constitute criminal behavior. Do you feel that the line between unethical and criminal behavior is blurred more-so in law enforcement than other professions? Should ethical violations by police officers be treated more like criminal activities than breaches of professionalism to be handled administratively? We have a code of conduct in the police department that we must follow. It's expected. You can be terminated for performing unethical behavior as a police officer. I do not think it's blurred, it's black and white. You must live by a code as an officer and then a criminal code. The ethical questions are answered in the book they give us.
No, I think it should be handled administratively, which could lead to termination. Everyone should be held to the same set of rules in the criminal world.
The movie did a good job explaining how police corruption can sometimes be a cyclical/generational problem (corruption gets dealt with, everything is fine, then it comes back again in 20 years or so)...with NYPD corruption occurring over 20 years ago now, do you think widespread corruption has, or will ever, come back around again? There is always small pockets of corrupt activity, but it will never be systemic as it was in the 70s with Serpico or the 80s with my case. There are many more safeguards in place, and officers are learning today that although they are reluctant to snitch on another, their actions can impact their partner whether they are OK with their behavior or not. Years ago there were no real consequences as long as your partner wouldn't cosign. Today that would not happen.
On the subject of the current climate of policing, it seems that cops today are distrusted more than ever. Not only with the Black Lives Matter movement but in general cops seem to be getting a bad reputation (i.e. having a superiority complex or using excessive force in general). This, with the increased militarization of the police force seems to be creating a very worrying combination. Do you think we are facing a major problem with our police force? If so, how do we fix it? are body cameras enough (they seem to be the main proposed solution)? The bottom line is that the police today are better trained than ever before. People in general expect a lot more, rightfully so, but the reality is, police have the most difficult job in the world. You call them only when there is an emergency, they are expected to do the job of a robot and still be human.
Body cameras are part of the solution. Non lethal weapons are another step in the right direction. Police officers are being filmed all day long, they should be able to film themselves. Society has evolved, time to step up.
Police don't have the most difficult or dangerous job in the world though and acting as such they run the risk of not feeling a situation out and just acting like the military where they feel under threat 24/7. Back in the 80s in East NY Brooklyn, they had the most dangerous job in the world.
Was it a relief for you to testify or was it excruciating having to air it all out? A combination of both. it was a relief to get out of the cell i was in for two years, once confronted with the circus of the Mollen Commission, Leslie Krane was grilling me with an absurd tone in her voice, when we discussed the same questions a week before casually over coffee. I was not expecting this dog and pony show.
What was your time like on the NYPD? You know what, it was fascinating. Everyday something new occurred, whether it was thrilling, dangerous, ridiculous; it was just a non stop variety of situations. These situations could make a young man into a time-tested adult in a very short period of time.
Where do I buy the movie? All I am seeing is a link on imdb to amazon pre order (september 15th). Is it out in select theatres or available elsewhere? Yeah there's a link on my site Link to themikedowd.com
Right now they are doing a re-release next month, it was on VOD on playstation, xbox, iTunes, amazon and comcast, but they're waiting for an event. It's in theaters in the UK starting friday.
Sir , Do you believe the Seven Five reflects issues nationwide today , or rather how it was in the 90's Brooklyn/NY only ? I don't think there are levels of corruption like this any more. This is more about the 80's and 90's. I think it provides an illustration that the police forces have continued to improve. And hope that it will produce further change
Do you think the documentary will in any way further damage the relationship between the police and the public? I think it will help because they will see how bad it was back then, and realize that while it's not perfect, things are heading in a better direction. once they make technological improvements, those days will be gone forever.
How was the 55k haul you mentioned as being your biggest score obtained? The hardest thing about scoring money is getting it out of the location. I wasn't working with Kenny at the time, so I had to figure out how to do this on my own.
Was it the money from the weed dealer? Nope, from a coke dealer.
How were you treated in prison by other cons? They had a welcoming mat out for me when I walked into prison.
I was slightly above child molester, not very nice, I walked the track by myself for 12.5 years.
Do you like the show Law & Order SVU? I love the show, it's a lot of fun to watch and has a lot of interesting and entertaining plots. It's one of the few shows I actually do watch and enjoy.
Since this question is asked on reddit near daily. What is the best way to get off with a warning for a traffic violation such as speeding? Also do officers usually give the 5 above the limit? Never deny it. Say sorry officer, what can I do. If you have an uncle on the job, let them know and ask for some courtesy. NEVER tell an officer they should be doing something else, wasting your time.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions :) No problem!

2013.05.18 17:34 Ryokukitsune [tl;dr]Web streaming and Live TV

I'm hearing some hub-bub from some broadcast networks about a test program they are running where certain channels are getting a streaming options for their content. I'm a little concerned about this because I'm not sure whats going into it. While I find Video On Demand [VOD hereafter] convenient its also difficult to stay up to date on programs I want to watch.
I frequent TV guide index sites for a few programs I watch that drop updates when new content is available. Its user maintained so its a bit hit or miss when someone just wants to add content for the brownie-points/karma in site popularity contests. Relying on VOD is like managing a TV station that is tailored just for you and its a lot of work honestly and I miss my live TV days when someone actually made money from the commercials that let me just veg in front of the set and watch my cartoons. I still watch my cartoons but now I have to sort my feeds so I know when the new episodes come out.
This is a problem with a lot of streaming services today and a reason why Cable services still have a little bit of relevancy left to them. Its something that people still pay their subscription fees for if only so they don't have to go out of their way and THINK about what shows they like or so they don't watch everything in their queue of programs all at once, that’s what the DVR [VOD] is for. One would think it would be more cost effective to translate this over to serving programs on the internet and I hope this is what networks are doing with their small scale experiments.
I was pretty stoked the first time I got a Netflix and Hulu+ subscription, they where cheap and lacked the bloat of cable prices but it was pretty hard to actually find something to watch on the services. While they have LIBRARIES of content; to watch the new stuff, namely what I paid in to the service for, was mired in network butt-hurt that the internet was competing with cable/sat business. Fox namely, decided to wait an entier month to air their content on Hulu. You can't find Game of Thrones ANYWHERE unless you have a wired subscription and the premium channels or you feel like waiting the 6 months for the box set to come out.
I don't buy box sets. The internet is a wonderful place and more often than not I don't save content to my computer anymore because I've come to the mentality of “meh, it'll be here later” and stuff is as easy to find as a simple Google search. Typically if I don't find the instance I'm looking for when I come back I find a better instance with more information on the subject. Streaming is an interesting problem because when looking for legal content you tend to stumble on the illegal shops first.
The big complaint that TV broadcasters have with the internet rite now is they are competing with Free; Free as in Piracy. You can search any number of shows on the net and find them either in a bittorrent swarm (i.e. the record setting Game of Thrones piracy in Aulstrailia) and indexing sites, much like my RSS feed for TV updates (no longer served by google, thanks for closing up shop on that one guys) you can just as easily keep up with new releases on dedicated community sites who's only return to the proposition is that the content remains up despite the best efforts of the broadcast industry.
Like music piracy getting shaken up around the turn of the millennium video piracy has come into its own as the industry resists the shift over to the misnomer “cordless” model of delivery. I don't remember the last time I accidentally stumbled a crossed a music piracy site since I started using Spotify and Pandora, I've heard more about the occasional exploits that let people download music for free from them but they where quickly patched.
Of all the music I listen to I've actually paid the $2-300 a year for the new stuff I want to listen to thanks to these outlets A) introducing me to new content and B) giving me the options to buy them from sources I trust. I'm still anti-corporation but I'd rather do business with Amazon than BestBuy as much as I'd rather pay artists directly or shop at a mom n' pops record store that are rapidly going out of fashion since the digital age; I digress though, back to the point; I can't do that with video content just yet because we are still stuck in the growing pains era of the broadcast industry realising they are losing this war of digital insurgency to pirates giving away their content for free!
While these broadcasters are doing their feel-good experiments to see if streaming technology is ready for them they are also suing people into oblivion trying to stop a tsunami of file sharing while they just sit on their hands for the most part. If you haven't heard there is a little New York start-up called Aereo that is rebroadcasting Over The Air television [OTA] to its subscribers and pissing off the big 3 letter networks out there. FOX CBS and ABC are threatening to pull their content from OTA and move over to cable services as premium channels if the court system decides that Aereo's business is actually legal.
They have become so complacent at gouging their customers with fixed fees for decades the though of losing out on those rebroadcast fees scares the hell out of them. All because Aereo is taking advantage of a loophole in the law that allows them to feed that content to their subscribers, for a subscription fee no less. Sure they could sit at home and watch those same programs on their TV in the living room but they shell out $12/mo but a subscription for the “luxury” of OTA TV on their Ipad and phones.
Its opened the eyes for a few networks not completely diluted with their own influence over technology. Time Warner has come out saying it might make a competing service if its found legal. They see it as a very lucrative option for its subscriber base while everyone else just seems to feel threatened.
In a time when the Daily Show by John Steward get pulled off of Hulu because Comcast and the owners of Comedy Central can't come to a licensing agreement over their CABLE business it is getting really hard to take these people seriously anymore.
While I have high hopes for TV coming to the internet in the near future I'm also skeptical that it might happen sometime before I DIE OF OLD AGE. Its starting to look like we don't even need “TV” anymore since we can get all the benefits from our addiction to the internet. We could use all those bands sucked up by broadcast television for bandwidth and widen a few lanes on the information super highway we are promised.
Like the freeway project of the 1950s I'm wondering if its time for the government to step in and take us from the age of internet back roads to a public works capable of widening those lanes out to include not only a fast lane but one for Carpool.
Streaming is something that the people have spoken very loudly and clearly about. Though since the broadcast industry is in the private sector its become a rusted hulk with so much friction the parts inside it barely move to the forces at work trying to articulate it into something new.
I hope the experiments yield results we are all looking for otherwise its going to be a long road ahead for the transition to digital distribution...

Questions Answers
Was that really Dog the Bounty Hunter? If so, how did you get him and do you have any crazy bounty hunting stories? That was Dog! We lucked out in getting him on board. The director of the film, Alan Deutsch is also a producer and director on Dog's show so he pulled a few strings and got The Dog to come out to Austin, TX and do a cameo for a day. He was incredibly nice to everyone on the cast and crew and was adamant about us getting exactly what we wanted out of him. And he loves Pepsi. A lot.
What kind of Pepsi? Also, did anybody offer him ice with his Pepsi? If so, did he think they were referring to crack cocaine and give them a speech? Just regular Pepsi in a bottle. Everyone knew better than to offer His Majesty, Dog the Bounty Hunter ice.
Any nudity in it? Abso-lutely.
Will it be on Netflix in the near future? It will be. Sometime this summer.
'Merican only? Or will it include Canadian? Good question, I'm not really sure.
Ok, I'll bite. What's the name of the movie? "Austin High". It's listed on VOD services as "420 Austin High"
Is this a US only service? (I live in the frigid north called Canada) Link to itunes.apple.com
I'll check it out. I like stoner stuff. Reminds me of a less stressful time in my life. Cool, thanks! It's more of a broad comedy that just so happens to include a lot of stoned-ness. More Mel Brooks than Cheech and Chong.
Any advice for independent filmmakers now that you've completed a feature film? Don't shrug off post-production costs. During filming, we were always running into things that cut into our post budget and we did what we had to do to just finish the film. Then we got to post and had very little budget for editing, sound mix/design and music. That's the real reason the film took so long to complete.
Also, next time I'm going to write a more simple story that takes place in only a few locations with a few characters. I loved having all of our actors and set pieces but it was a beast to coordinate and pull off.
Also part deux, don't be a dick to people. They're working for cheap or free to work in the film industry. Be nice.
I would have edited and mixed your audio and did the sound design for free. Independent artists need to help each other out and support the arts. Maybe next time, champ. You're a badass. And I may just be in contact in the near future. :)
Budget? Tech stuff? Camera? Edited on? Budget came it at around 100k. We shot on the Canon 5D and 7Ds. Edited on Final Cut Pro.
How did you feel about using those cameras re battery life? I was thinking shooting on my t2 but dunno should I look around and borrow something else. Battery life wasn't really an issue because so many people on set had Canon products, we always had a few spares to go around. The issue that we kept running into was the cameras overheating. When that happens there's nothing you can do but turn it off and wait in the 106 degree heat for it to cool down.
What about sound equipment? I'm not sure of the exact brand of sound equipment. We used both boom and lav mics and had a field mixer.
Interesting. I've heard of overheat problems but never had it happen myself. I had the chance to work with the 5D mk III and it's awesome as a movie camera. All the crap you have to work around with the mk II, the 7D and the T2i is totally gone. Yea, the mk III is a dream. I wish we had that when we shot.
Did you re-dub all the audio in post production, or was there not enough time/resources/money left in the budget? Or was it a purely artistic decision? We didn't re-dub all of it, just picked up some random spots here and there that were crappy on-set dialogue.
How stoned were you while doing the film? Not very. We were pulling 16-18 hour days almost every day so things were semi-intense. Pre and post production were a different story...
Stoner! Not me.
Wanna be my friend while I'm "stranded" at my parents house in Austin for the next couple weeks? I'll bring snacks... Sure. Wanna play Blazer Tag?
Blazer tag.... do elaborate. It's the biggest laser tag arena in TX. They play techno remixes of the Braveheart theme on repeat. It's not un-fun.
You got a link to the trailer? Link to youtu.be
Got a link to the torrent? I'm sure it'll be torrent-able soon. That's when I know I've made it in this world.
I just IMDb stalked you and saw you were in "Ross McKenzie..." I'm friends with a couple of guys on that picture, we all went to film school together. Small world, eh? It is a small world. I'm friends with AT.
Crazy, I'm good buddies with SK. We've worked in the trenches together on a few things. Thanks for the info! If I wake up in a cold sweat later realizing I forgot a question, could I drop you a PM? Hah. Definitely. I do dream analysis too.
How old are you? What made you want to become a filmmaker? What advice can you give to an aspiring script writefilmmaker like myself? I'm 27. I've wanted to be some kind of entertainer since I was a kid. After realizing I couldn't break dance, I started to mess around with short comedy films around junior high time. Since then that's pretty much all I've focused on.
Only advice I'd give is to write/make your films. I spent a lot of time doing internships and working shitty jobs on set and didn't get too much out of that. It's good to network and meet people but you'll never get the opportunity to make your films if you don't have something to show. Plus, you'll get a lot more respect as someone who's made a film rather than someone who talks about making a film.
That was for show, right? You didn't actually smoke oregano... No we did. It was disgusting. Actors hated us.
Haha that's hilarious. Egg whites and kool-aid flavored weed. Quite a head rush.
Trailer looks awesome! I think I may have to give this a watch. I've always wondered though, what is that weed substitute they use in films? Here's a little vignette with our chosen method of weedery: Link to youtu.be
The trailer looks hilarious! How long have you been into making films and what was the budget for the movie? Thank you! I've been making films since junior high, although they're pretty unwatchable now. I guess I've been serious about filmmaking since college. Budget was around 100k which goes pretty quickly when you start shooting a feature film.
There are a lot of trolls on this subreddit. Not saying I don't believe you, but is there any way to prove you made the movie? I'm no celebrity so no reason for me to lie, but nonetheless, I linked a picture of me in my illustrious cameo role as DJ Tinklesqueez (which can be seen for a split second in the trailer).
Anyway, the movie looks hilarious. I've always thought what it would be like if my friends and I all ended up teaching at our old high school. It sounds like making it took much more time than you expected. What was it that made it take so long? Thank you! It took so long because of our restricted budget. The whole "fast, good or cheap and you can only pick one" saying was very true. We had to pull in favors at every stage of production so we couldn't rightly give hard deadlines to our friends that were doing us a kindness. We also did a shitload of test screenings to make sure that our jokes were hitting their marks.
Would it upset you if people torrent your movie rather than paying for it? Upset is a strong word. I would prefer that they purchase it in some form or fashion so that we can make our investor his money back and continue to make films. BUT, if it were between not watching the film at all and torrenting it, I'd prefer people get to see it somehow. I torrent things myself, mostly when I'm not able to find something or when the distributor withholds the release of something (GoT). That being said, let's torrent things like Battleship and throw the indie guys a bone!
even torrent the movie as a measure of judging the quality of the movie before going out and purchasing it? I'm not opposed to that. There's a lot of shit out there.
I just smoked is this movie on Netflix, HuluPlus or some shit? It will be on Netflix very soon. Netflix doesn't give the best deals to the independents.
I've always wondered how that worked. Do you get a cut for every view or is it like a renter store where they just pay a larger amount up front? No cut per views. They basically put the film on their site with the "save" function on. Then based on how many people add the film to their queue, you got one flat fee for a certain agreed-upon amount of time. It sucks. I'm not sure how disc rentals work on there but Instant sucks for filmmakers without an established name or marketing campaign.
Cool movie! Or so I think from the trailer! Do you have any ideas for your next movie? Thanks! I do. And it sure as hell won't take place in a high school.
Why, what's wrong with shooting in a high school? Any stories to tell? Nothing wrong with it. It was just incredibly difficult to shoot an R-rated comedy in a state-run high school. Then when we finally found someone cool enough to let us, there was the problem of filling it with high school aged kid extras whose parents didn't mind them being in a comedy that glamorizes drug use.
Hehe sounds cool, what genre? Comedy/horror.
Together? Like an Evil Dead/Army Of Darkness kind of thing? Yea. I pray it's in the same realm as those.
How can i watch your movie being in the netherlands? i never used itunes and i don't plan to, any other options? We should be on Netflix and Amazon later this summer. Otherwise, you may have to take to the high seas...
I don't have cable. Is there any place on the internet that I can watch it that won't be taking money out of your pocket? Is it available on your site? Is it available on Amazon Instant? edit - don't direct me to iTunes. I refuse to put that bloatware piece of crap on my computer. Hahah. I appreciate that but we don't have our own distribution outlet at the moment. Amazon Instant is coming soon, as is DVD and Blu-Ray through Amazon.
How hard is it to actually make a profit in the independent world? Any ideas for future films in the making? Well, this is my first foray into the feature film world but I have a lot of friends who have been in it for a while and it's pretty difficult. The studios and distributors don't want to make or release anything that doesn't have a big name attached or is already a viable property (comic book, reboot, toy). But, Video On Demand is changing some of that. It's getting easier to secure a release with VOD and if the film's budget is kept low then making a profit is less daunting. We'll see how this one goes. It's been out on VOD for a couple of months but we haven't heard anything from the distributor about what kind of numbers it's done. Fingers crossed. The real goal is to just make the investor back his money so I can continue to make more films.
I've got a few ideas in the works.
How do you go about finding investors? We actually found our investor at Burning Man. That's a good place to start I guess.
How did you get your start? What advice do you have for film students who are trying to follow their dreams like you are? I got my start out of film school as a post-production dude at a video game publisher. Did a lot of editing and a little bit of shooting.
Keep at it. Get around people who know what they're doing and watch and learn. If you want to write or direct, do that as much as humanly possible. That's more important than going to film school.
What was the hardest part of the shoot? The hardest part of the shoot was just getting it all in the can. Because of our restricted budget we had to cram in a lot of things to a short period of time. We had about 35 locations and close to 100 featured roles and 19 days to shoot it all. Dumb.
Also, there is a rally at the end of the film that was particularly hairy. We were trying to sell it as a jam-packed, city-wide event but getting extras to come stand out in the 100+ Texas heat for no dough was difficult. It was an exercise in camera wizardry to fill the frames with our same 50 extras. Hope that doesn't ruin the illusion if you choose to watch the film!
I was able to find a torrent for this surprisingly enough, but me once being an aspiring filmmaker i could not make myself do it. 10 dollars to you good sir! But for the AMA part. How did you get started in film making? I've been making films for a good portion of my life but sort of got serious about it when I went to film school. I made a few films during school and did a lot of internships at local production companies and on sets. Then I broke off and did my own thing. Started a production company called Beef & Sage with a very funny man named Will Elliott, where we made a bunch of comedy shorts. www.beefandsage.com.
How did you keep yourself motivated in the early stages of trying to become what you are now? I just have a crippling fear of failure that my parents instilled in me at an early age and that has kept me motivated. Also, watching funny or great films is a big inspiration to try to make great work.
Duuude! This looks awesome!! What was your favorite part to shoot? We shot at a place called Hippy Hollow. It's a nude beach here in Austin. That was really fun.
I didnt know they had nude beaches in Austin! Sounds cool! Can't wait to watch it! Yea, but beach probably wasn't the right word. It's more of a rocky cove out on Lake Travis. Lotta naked old men.
Holy shit was that Dog The Bounty Hunter?? 'twas. His first feature film role!
Does this have the token sexualization of women and treating them as one-dimensional fuck objects? Yes, women are sexualized in the film but so are men. Intrigued? I think there are a enough strong female characters in the movie to even out the hyper-sexualized ones that were shown off in the trailer.
Edit: Still looks fucking awesome, don't know why I felt the need to ask a cynical question. Just waiting for the downvotes now. "Dinosaur eats man, woman inherits the Earth."
Trailer looks great, how was it working with Dog? Dog was a badass. He had just come from doing something with George Clooney (not sure what but I want to see it). He told us a story about how he asked Clooney if he had any advice for him. Clooney told him, "Just go for it." And he definitely did. He was at full intensity every time he was on camera and we could all tell he was having a blast. He's a good man.
If you had a chance to make the movie over again, what would you do differently? I would write a more contained story that didn't take place in a high school. We had way too many locations for our budget and securing a high school for an R-rated stoner comedy in Texas was quite difficult. That was the only location that was really hard to lock down but oh was it hard.
I also wouldn't shoot in June.
Looks like a good film to watch while baked. Is it available to watch anywhere else other than itunes? I'm from the uk I don't know if that makes any difference. I'm pretty sure you can still rent from iTunes in the UK. Currently it's just available on there and US Cable On Demand services like Time Warner and Comcast. You'll be able to get it from Amazon and Netflix soon though.
for the film in general. do you as a group expect to make your money back? or did you go into it assuming you wouldnt. We are hoping that we can make our investor his money back. There's a slimmer chance of us making any profit but yea we didn't go into the film with that as an expectation or even goal.
***** Question (rsmoot): You got a link to the trailer? Answer (kijo524): ** Link to youtu.be. ***** (continued below) Y'all gotta ask the hard hitting questions!
Did your investor expect to make it back Yes.
How large was your crew? AND what'd you do for craft services? (By the way, awesome looking movie.) Crew was around 30 people. We had a few food donations, very friendly friends who cooked often and a few of our Moms came in town and made their finest.
How can i go about watching this? It's available right now on iTunes and almost all the cable VOD providers.
Link to itunes.apple.com
Are you a mariuhana consumer? Would be awesome. From time to time.
How does one "Direct" dog the bounty hunter. I mean its reality TV so what does the director do? He's basically in charge of piecing together each episode's story in post. And tells him how to wear his hair.
Trailer looks fuckin awesome!! I want to toke up and watch this so bad. Where can I find it? Link to itunes.apple.com
But... but... I have Zune! It's also available on most Cable networks On Demand. Check!
I am thinking of doing the same thing as you. Do you have any advice for those about to embark on the same journey? Find a girlfriend who is very supportive and patient.
Don't sit around and over think things. Just do it. Learn from your mistakes and keep making them until you win an Oscar. I'm still pretty green and don't know what the hell I'm doing most of the time. Fake the funk.
I want to be a director after high school and college. Can you give me some tips on what I should do? Start making films using whatever equipment you have. It takes some time to exorcise the shit from your system. I'm still getting shitty films out of me.
Are there DVD/Bluray pressings available for physical purchase? This movie seems right up my ally and I'd rather not give 30% to iTunes, plus I'd love to watch this with some friends. Not as of now. They should be available on Amazon in the next couple months. Or if you live in Austin, I'll hand deliver one.
What did you shoot on? We shot on the Canon 5d and 7d.
Can I just pay you $15 for the movie? Sure! PM me with your info.
Who is that handsome bearded guy?! He's a total babe Byron Brown.
Lesbians and big ass joints? im in. Godspeed!
Quentin tarantino?! Yep, it's me QT.
Did you guys use any real weed when filming? Here and there.
You might want to stop in on /trees and say hello. I did! Bring the ruckus, Ents.
How much did making the film cost you. Me, personally? I'm not sure but I definitely haven't made any money on it.
Looks fucking great man, I'm going to watch it now. I really appreciate that.
Catnip also looks like weed. Maybe next movie you can have your actors smoke catnip. Then we may have a bath salt situation on our hands...
Copy the URL (or the body of your post) and submit a link (be sure to add [x-post from /IAMA] to the end of the title) to /trees. Should look like this. Hope it helps! Link to www.reddit.com
Ok, I just paid $15 for your movie on itunes. Now you have to at least watch mine!. It cost me about $3000 not including camera or software. Shot on FX7 using FCP took 1.5 years. EDIT: proof! You da man! I'll return the favor. FX7 is a damn fine camera.
The Doritos guy strikes again! O_O. Byron Brown (Doritos guy) plays a pretentious pedicabbie in the film. He's amazing.
#1 reason I want to see this movie is because of the Doritos Guy and definitely not the weed. Good! His comedic performance is more impressive than any buzz.
How do you support yourself and your projects as a filmmaker. Freelance shooting, editing and panhandling. I cut a lot of video game trailers and never pass up an easy, soul-sucking corporate gig to pay the bills.
I'll watch that... Do it!
Watched this on demand a few weeks ago. Highly recommended. Thaaanks!
I hate my cable provider on most day, today....today is a special level of hate. I wanted to check out your movie but, nope, not available. Dammit. Write your local congressman.
Looks great! Wondering how many of the cast/crew were paid and how many were volunteer, and how you went about casting this (auditions, friends, etc). I'd say 80% of the cast/crew were paid. Most of them though were paid well below the rate they deserved. Others were paid on a deferred basis which meant half then, half if/when we recoup our costs. So, they were sort of taking on chance on that second half of the payment. We did have some PAs, Grips and Extras as well that were volunteer. The real heroes.
Casting was a lot of people that we had worked with in the past. A couple of the roles were written with local actors in mind. Then we did casting for about 15 other roles through auditions with a casting director.
I was going to see that with the NORMAL group at my school. Too bad the tugg company fucked up big time and sent the wrong film...a religious documentary .....so they are setting up a screening in the fall! Holy shit! Really? Was this in Boston?
I was dabbling around and found it on iTunes for $4 to rent or $10 to buy. Seems good enough that I'll be renting it. Link to itunes.apple.com
This actually looks bad ass. Watching it tonight! Hope you enjoy it!
Composer here! Let me know if you ever want to collaborate: www.sashaszlafarski.com. Awesome stuff! I like the "Magicians" Trailer song. I've got your info now.
Oh man I lost it when the Grimy Styles kicked in on the trailer! Love em. ATX here. I can't believe I haven't heard of this movie yet, but I'll have to check it out soon. Nice! I'm a huge Grimy Styles fan too and they've been ultimate badasses about letting us feature their music. If you're in ATX, it's available on DVD at 420 Spot.
Oh, a stoner comedy....how original... I think you should give it a chance.
Oh, a love story....how original... Oh, a comic book movie...how original...
Can we please keep the questions to your other movie, Rampart? Say what?
I just watched the trailer and it took you 3 years to make that? I could've made a better movie sitting on my shitter. Cool! Send me a link to your movie when you're done and I'll give it a watch.
